Questions for Producers and Manufacturers
Questions for Retailers below.
We understand not all of these questions may apply to you, but it is helpful for us to understand where you are on your zero waste journey and what your commitment is to waste reduction and protecting Papatūānuku and Ranginui
Tell us a bit about your raw materials and product packaging
e.g. Do you use any recovered, recycled, or organic materials? Where are your materials sourced? Is it recyclable in Aotearoa? If packaging is plastic, does it have a clear recycling symbol identifying the type of plastic?
What is your approach to product stewardship?
How do you track and manage your impact?
e.g. Are you tracking, reporting and managing your use of energy, water and chemicals? Do you measure your carbon footprint? Do you have targets for reducing your use of energy, water and chemicals? Do you use renewable energy at your site/s? How do you manage solid waste from production? Do you recycle any of your key inputs, such as water or chemicals? How do you manage any hazardous chemicals or materials in your production? Do you have an environmental management system in place and is it consistent with an internationally accepted standard, e.g. ISO 14001? Do you offset carbon emissions?
Are you certified under any social or environmental certification scheme?
e.g. BCorp, Toitū, Ekos, Ākina, CoGo etc
Tell us a bit about how you look after your people
e.g. Do you have a Wellbeing Policy? Do employees get paid a fair wage?
Questions for Retailers
If you are selling food/drink/groceries etc and your primary packaging systems are unpackaged or reusable packaging systems....
Do you sell the majority of stocked product via unpackaged or reusable packaging systems, where customers can fill their own bags and containers, or buy product in packaging that they can return to you for reuse?
e.g. Bulk bins or "on tap" models or returnable bottle or jar systems (where customers can return the empty bottles and jars and they get sanitised, refilled and returned to shelf)
If you stock products from suppliers who run returnable bottle or jar systems for their product packaging, do you act as a take back/drop-off point for customers to bring their empty packaging?
Do you offer take back services for your packaging and/or other items, for the purpose of reusing it or ensuring it gets recycled?
Do you allow for bulk purchasing (and therefore less packaging)?
What, if any, actions have you taken to avoid unnecessary packaging in your operation?
Please outline briefly your internal considerations for ensuring the items you sell are as sustainable as possible
e.g. quality, repairability, fairtrade, toxicity, freight footprint

If your business model is a product-as-a-service business model (e.g. leasing/rental/sharing) or a product life extension model (reuse/secondhand/repaired goods)...
Does your business rely on leasing, sharing or renting a product that people might otherwise own?
Are the products you sell secondhand or repaired rather than brand new?
